Visual Effects (VFX) VERSUS Computer Generated Imagery(CGI)

Our colourful world of imagination comprising of dragons, vampires, angels and ghosts looks splendid in our imaginations. But for some artists, it became their motto to showcase their imagination to the whole world and hence came VFX and CGI.Even though these words are used side by side, they are commonly replaced for each other with their slight difference being ignored.

Today, we will discuss the differences between the two.Firstly, lets understand what vfx and cgi stand for and what are their meanings.

VFX

Visual effects are reated by manipulating computer-generated images and live taken clicks for film and animation process. These are so called because they are impossible to create on film sets and are hence created using computer graphics.

CGI

CGI is the short form for Computer Generated Imagery. In simple words, anything that is created digitally on the computer platform is called CGI. in layman terms, CGI is more of a complex term used for 3D computer graphics. However it is not limited to only 3d and can be used for 2d images as well and are static and dynamic in nature both.

DIFFERENCES

VFX is mainly used to create action sequences out of a combination of live actiond shots and digitak images. CGI on the other hand is used to create images, print media, commercials, animations, videos etc. VFX is completely based upon perfect timing. Even animations relating to real people need to be shot and compiled properly to give the perfect animation. VFX is mostly used in the post-production pricess but is planned during the shoot.

VFX uses CGI to create high quality, standardized quality animations. CGI helps in the creation of images and effects that cannot be achieved using other techniques or methods. The materials used in VFX consists of the live action images shot on set or separate practical elements shot with the camera such as explosions or fire, models or elements generated with a computer. So, Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) is a part of the visual effects process.

To understand it very easy...

VFX are created using various specially designed software and specifically required for a certain need. CGI, on the other hand, are computer generated Images that are created on a digital platform but it does not require any advanced software.
