A source of inspiration in volatile times and country's first black President from 1994 to 1999, Nelson Mandela whose Birth day is on 18th July and he was born in 1918. He was appreciated for his bravery and understanding in bringing people together to live in peace. who was often dubbed as the 'Gandhi of South Africa', had strong Indian connections and striking similarities with India's 'Father of Nation' Mahatma Gandhiji.

As per the Wikipedia there is no formal provision that recipients of the Bharat Ratna should be Indian citizens. Here’s the list of Non-Indians who have received Bharat Ratna award

2. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan of Pakistan in 1987
3. South African president Nelson Mandela in 1990

He had received the award from Indian President KR Narayanan. The Gandhian philosophy was one of the driving forces behind Nelson Mandela’s lifelong anti-apartheid movement for which he underwent 27 years of imprisonment for his protest against the apartheid government of South Africa. He admired Mahatma Gandhi as his role model. He was a diehard follower of Gandhi’s principles – “Truth and Nonviolence”. He was honored with the “Bharat Ratna” soon after his release from imprisonment in the year 1990 when he visited India as a pilgrimage. Mandela said that Gandhi's ideals had played a significant role in the transformation of South Africa.
